Maja Godlewska was born and educated in Wroclaw, Poland where she obtained her MFA in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts. She also studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland. She lived in West Africa for almost two years and this experience influenced her early work. Her primary medium is painting, and she is also an installation artist, photographer and has experience in graphic design. She has lived and worked creatively in Charlotte, NC since 1997, while still pursuing her artistic career abroad. Since 2004, Maja Godlewska has been an Assistant Professor of Painting at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Ms. Godlewska is a recipient of numerous grants, residencies and awards in United States, Europe, South America and Asia, including Tempus Mobility Grant from European Union in Brussels, Belgium; Kosciuszko Polish-American Foundation Grant, NYC, NY, Arts and Science Council Grant in Charlotte, NC; North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship (at Vermont Studio Center, VT); Faculty Research Grant from UNC Charlotte. She has had residencies in the United States (McColl Center for Visual Arts in Charlotte, NC and VSC, VT), France, Italy, Chile, South Korea, and Spain.
